Pharmacologic Treatment of Arthritis in Children*

The treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is largely based on multicenter pharmaceutical studies, individual patient responses, and physician experience, although consensus guidelines are lacking for patients not responsive to conventional treatment. Pharmacologic treatment is driven by the subtype of JIA and disease severity. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, and biologic agents are important components of pharmacotherapy. Patient adherence and a multidisciplinary healthcare team approach are essential to optimal clinical outcomes. (Adv Stud Pharm. 2008;5(6):176-183)
